Lenovo Yoga C930 13.9 inch 2-in-1 Laptop
Lenovo has created a new premium flagship 2-in-1 touchscreen laptop this year,
the C930 series. Last year’s model had a unique watchband hinge design that stood out in the crowd. Can this year’s model beat it? Let’s do a detailed review of the Lenovo Yoga C930 and see.
This year’s laptop comes in the 13.9-inch screen/form factor; and 3 configurations are available: FHD, UHD/4K and the glass wrapped cover. The model that we have reviewed is on the high-end of the spectrum and the specs maxed out in every way. Our Lenovo Yoga C930 reviewed has a UHD/4K display, 16 Gb of RAM, and the latest 8th Gen Intel Core i7 processor. The storage is also ultra-fast with the 512 Gb PCIe NVMe SSD drive running Microsoft Windows 10 Home.
Standard features on this unit include a fingerprint sensor, 720p webcam with built-in privacy shutter, active stylus, and a trackpad. Ports include 2 Thunderbolt USB-C, 1 USB 3.1, 1 3.5mm audio headphone jack.
The Lenovo Yoga C930 13.9 inch 4K 2-in-1 is a convertible touchscreen laptop that is capable of transforming from a laptop to a tablet. It also has 2 additional modes for presentations and movie watching with the keyboard facing down or away from the screen. These 4 configurations are usable for a portable ultrabook because of its smaller form factor.
A polished metallic slate is precisely crafted to become the body of the Lenovo Yoga C930 mica. We choose the mica version for it is capable of catching both the limelight and the attention of bystanders. A darker ‘iron grey’ version is also available and is equally beautiful.
The unit is on the heavier side but light enough to carry around from meeting to meeting. There is definitely a sense of solidity when holding this laptop.
There are 4 ways to interact with the Lenovo Yoga C930 2-in-1 13.9 inch 4K laptop: fingerprint, trackpad, keyboard and touchscreen; let take a look at each.
The fingerprint sensor is situated on the right corner of the palm rest area. It is out of the way and is responsive and fast. Signing in feels almost instantaneous. If for some odd reason it wouldn’t let you in, you can use the keyboard to enter your PIN.
Yoga C930 Keyboard
The width and height of the keyboard are of the right dimension. Each of the keys has a travel of up to 1.3 mm in our measurements. There is enough cushion that made it feel good to type on for an extended duration, unlike the latest Apple MacBook Pro keyboard that hurts your fingers while typing.
The keyboard offers 2 brightness levels, which is handy if you prefer to work with the lights out. If you are in tablet mode, you can bring up the virtual keyboard to get into Windows.
Touchscreen & Stylus
The Lenovo Yoga C930 2-in-1 touchscreen has accurate reception with either your finger or the accompanied stylus. We really like Lenovo building a ‘pen cave’ for the included stylus so we will never be without one. The active stylus lives in the rear of the review unit tugged away neatly. The cave acts as a dock and a charger for the active stylus so it’s always ready to go.
The friction between the tip and the screen is real. If you are planning to write or draw for hours, you may want to get the Lenovo Active Pen 2. This pen has 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity and a wider barrel for a comfortable hold.
Laptops these days come with a larger trackpad and the one that comes with the Lenovo Yoga C930 Mica is no different. The sliding feels smooth and the divided left and right halves to resemble the mouse works well. It supports all the Microsoft Windows 10 gestures. The basic 2 finger pinch and zoom and the 2 finger horizontal and vertical scroll. Swiping 3 fingers away will bring up the Windows Task View while 3 fingers towards you to bring up the desktop. If you tap the trackpad with 3 fingers, it will bring up the Cortana / Seach Assistant; and a 4 finger tap roll out the Windows Action Center. We tested all the Windows 10 gestures and they all work as expected.
Yoga C930 Graphics
The engine behind the Lenovo Yoga C930’s 13.9 inch 4K UHD display is an Intel UHD 620 integrated graphics card. This is not a gaming machine so an integrated card is more than enough to power the 4K display.
Dolby Vision HDR (High Dynamic Range) is pre-installed, so you can watch HDR compliant video titles from Amazon or Netflix.
Yoga C930 4K Display
Our Yoga C930 ultrabook has a 13.9 inch UHD (Ultra High Definition) 4K display with colors that pop out of the screen. The bezels are relatively thin on the top 3 sides making the viewing area much larger; while the bottom bezel is over an inch in height.
Fortunately, Lenovo did not place the webcam in the lower bezel area and making it a ‘nose’ cam; like the Huawei Mate Pro X that hides the webcam under a physical key. The 720p webcam is situated on the top center of the screen and gets the job done for web meetings.
Our Lenovo Yoga C930 has a built-in sliding privacy shutter to physically block the lens from hackers. Although if someone has gained access to your webcam, you may have larger issues to deal with. Nonetheless, the shutter is discreet and effective, many times we have forgotten that it was closed over the camera lens.
Yoga C930 360 Dolby Atmos Sound
This year's Yoga C930 brings a unique 1 of a kind soundbar hinge design. The Dolby enabled speakers are cleverly hidden inside the hinged grill, allowing for 360 unblocked sound radiation. The speakers with Dolby Atmos sound 3 dimensional and crisp, from classical music to your favorite movies.
Yoga C930 Ports
The Lenovo Yoga C930 2-in-1 touchscreen ultrabook comes with 2 Thunderbolt USB-C ports that allow power to pass through. A legacy USB 3.1 Type A port for use with the bigger USB devices is also included. However, you may want to pick up a 10-in-1 USB-C Thunderbolt hubs for additional connectivity. We used ours to connect to our HDMI TV/monitor, and RJ45 Ethernet cable. We also connected our USB keyboard, mouse, Sony video camera and Blue Yeti microphone.
The 3.5mm headphone jack can be used with installed the Dolby Atmos app. This sound technology transports you into the middle of the soundstage with sound moving all around you.
The application, Dolby Access, from the windows store has free immersive demos that are available for sampling. There is also a playlist on Spotify titled ‘Dolby Atmos’ that have songs mastered with the Dolby sound technology.
Yoga C930 Battery Life
We purchase ultrabooks for its portability and with that a long battery life to match. What good is portability if the battery only lasts for 2 hours? Fortunately, our Yoga C930 has proven its worthiness in the battery department; as it lasted a whole 10 hours with intensive surfing and constant HD movie streaming as tested by our staff.
If you are getting less than 8 hours, check how often your apps are syncing. We made an adjustment to our email accounts to sync selectively to achieve a better battery life.
Lenovo’s provided a 65Watt charger with a USB C plug is also at the forefront. No more circular charger heads that are proprietary.
Lenovo has designed ‘rapid charge’ into the software, pumping more amps for a quick fill-up. On the flip side, if your Yoga Ultrabook is always plugged in, you can set it to ‘Conservation Mode’ and charge it at a slower rate (< 60% capacity), extending the battery’s life.
Bloatware is unavoidable but the included Lenovo Vantage, Dolby Atmos, and Dolby Vision HDR are all useful. Lenovo Vantage is like having the support department there with you. It shows how many days is left on the warranty and allows for system updates. It will also check for and report any hardware abnormalies. The 2 Dolby apps lets you customize both your audio and video settings on the Lenovo Yoga C930 for the best effect.
We will not cover the Microsoft Windows 10 usual suspect of bloatware (Candy Crush, Linkedin, etc.).
Yoga C930 Heat and Noise
Ultrabooks are packed tight in a small chassis so cooling is inevitably a problem. The heat can build up and affect the processor’s performance as it throttles down to avoid damage. Fortunately, our Lenovo Yoga C930 review unit, when placed under heavy surfing and streaming use, did not overheat. Don’t get us wrong, there was warmth on the underside of the ultrabook and the mechanical fan kicked in; but it was comfortable to use on our lap and the fan noise was not annoying.
Should I Buy the Lenovo Yoga C930?
We believe Lenovo has created a work of art that is both functional and performant. The sleek Lenovo Yoga C930 2-in-1 13.9 inch 4K touchscreen laptop in mica finish is one the top contenders in the convertible ultrabook category. While the unique and classy soundbar hinge is innovative and practical, the choices in unique mica, iron grey and a glass wrapped version screams premium, modern and leadership in style.
